Information about Arta

The Prefecture of Arta is located in the northwest part of Greece and geographically a part of the administrative district of Epirus. It extends in 1612 square kilometres and Arta is its main town. It is a Prefecture with extremely mountainous, semi-mountainous and lowland areas.

One of the main features of the Prefecture is the river Arachthos and its picturesque and historical stone bridge located near the town of Arta. Amvrakikos gulf with the interesting biotopes on the south and Tzoumerka mountain range with the rich forests and the running waters on the north are places of unique natural beauty. There are also many historical monuments scattered in the Prefecture reminding each time its rich historical background.

The city of Arta is the capital of the homonym prefecture. It is 360 km away from Athens and 15 km away from the Amvrakikos gulf. Its population numbers 40.000 inhabitantants. It is built on the ruins of ancient Amvrakia. The river Arachthos, with its historical bridge, surrounds it from its three sides. The seven hills of the city are surrounded by orange groves and olive groves, from a rich hinterland.
