Information about Chania
The Prefecture of Chania is located in the west side of the island and occupies an area of 2.375 square kilometers.
The 1.476 km of them are mountainous areas. North it is washed by the Cretan Sea and south by the Libyan Sea, while eastward borders on with the Prefecture of Rethymnon.
The capital of the Prefecture is the city of Chania with a population of about 65.000 people, whereas the entire prefecture has 110.000 inhabitants. It was named after a vitiation of the Arabic name of the region Al Chanim, according to one point of view.
It is a city of great history, since many Arabs, Venetians and Turks have walked through its alleys. As a result, the architectural influence of the Old Quarter of the city by these three cultures is obvious.
In the north part of the Prefecture, there is the large valley of Chania, where the most of the 17 million olive trees on the island grow, there are also enormous areas of orange trees.
The tourist substructure is great and efficient to respond to the high expectations of the tourists from Greece or Europe.
