Information about Heraklion

If we could separate Crete in two parts, in particular in East and West, then the Prefecture of Herakleion in the East part. On the west, it is the prefecture of Rethymnon and on the east Lasithi.

The north coasts of the prefecture are washed by the Cretan Sea while the south by the Libyan Sea.

Big mountains, such as Psiloritis (2456 m) on the borders with the prefecture of Rethymnon, Dicty mountain (2148 m) on the borders with Lasithi and the valley of Messara, one of the fewest and biggest valleys in Crete are the geophysical landmarks of the prefecture.

Herakleion is the biggest city (127.600 people) and the capital of the entire island, additionally the prefecture of Herakleion is the biggest in population.
Not only the coastline but also the mountainous regions of this prefecture, have they been inhabited since the Prehistoric Period.

Therefore, the area, apart from the newly-built towns of Timbaki, Moires, Kasteli Pediados, Arkalohori, is one of the richest in sights in Crete with the amazing palaces from the Minoan Period of Knossos, Phaistos, Mallia and the city of Herakleion.

The reason of maintenance and increase of the population in the other municipalities-cities of the prefecture should be ascribed to the constant economic rise of the area as well as of the entire island.
