Information about Thessaly

Area of the Greek state, that borders in the north with Macedonia, westwards with Epirus, in the east with the Aegean sea, Pagasitikos and Thermaikos gulf and from the south with Central Greece prefectures, Evritania and Fthiotida.

Thessaly is mainly a big flat country closed around by the mountains Olympus and Kamvounia (north), Othris (south), Ossa and Pilion (east). There is an opening between the mountains Olympus and Kamvounia that is the passage to Macedonia. These rows of mountains, shaped the period when Thessaly was an internal sea (lake). The rivers and streams that crossed it accumulated in time gravel and sand, progressively shaping Meteora.

Thessaly has an extent of 13.488 sq. km and 695.654 residents. Administratively it is separated in four prefectures: Larissa, Trikala, Karditsa and Magnesia.

The climate is continental, meaning that it is hot in summertime and cold in the winter, because of the surrounding mountains, that prevents the direct effect of the sea.
