Ancient Gods Complex in Lygaria

During the Venetian occupation, a long period in the history of Crete, the influence of which is obvious even today in the housing settlements, the fortifications and the castles of the island, the family of Modini had a very beautiful piece of land, with many villages, churches and windmills as its feud; it was where the picturesque seaside village Lygaria is today.

The feud does not exist any more, the family is gone, the history and the beauty of the landscape have not faded, however.

Lygaria , built just by the sea, on an enchanting site, with a marvellous beach, having in front just the open sea finding the horizon, continues to captivate those who love the unique Mediterranean style. A style found everywhere: in the beauty of the sea, the blue sky, the nearby picturesque villages with the abundant churches and the narrow streets, the hospitable local people, the tavernas, the warm atmosphere.

The piece of land is near the beautiful village, in a small valley very close to the sea, with a breathtaking view. On this piece of land, with respect to the tradition, using original earthy material, we build a small picturesque village of thirty six magnificent two stories stone Mediterranean houses, streets and paths, orange and lemon trees. We named the village « Ancient Gods » and each house has the name of a god.

The houses have been designed with affection, a lot of care and, mostly, with all our heart. They are built in order to provide a shelter, a space for calm, contact with nature, a space where one will be able to relax and enjoy the human aspect of life.

We use the stone of the Cretan earth all over; on the walls, in the narrow streets, on the stairs, on the yards. We work with wood in its original colours to build the roofs and the pergolas of our houses and we let it visible.

Our craftsmen line the roofs with tiles made of cretan clay, in earthy shades, just as their ancestors have been doing for thousands of years.

We line the floors of our houses with terracotta tiles that reach the courtyards in the outside. Our houses have green, planted courtyards. One can come out from his/her bedroom and walk barefoot in the greenery.

The narrow street made of stone and paving sett leads to the large space of the swimming pool with the pergola, its plants and its trees.

COMPLEX FEATURES

• Thirty six two stories houses , of 70m2 , with roof made of wood and tile
• Each house has a living - room , dining - room , kitchen and WC on the entrance level .
• In front, there is a large balcony of 20 m 2 with magnificent view
• An inside flight of stairs , by the entrance , leads to the lower level
• Occasionally, the same level can be reached from the outside, by a flight of stairs or modulated levels

• In front of the house, on the lower level, there is a roofed balcony of 20 m 2.
• As a natural extension of the lower balcony and at the same level , there is a clearly delineated courtyard partly lined with cotto tiles (10-20 m 2), whereas the rest is planted with lawn.

PROJECT SPECIFICATIONS

• Reinforced concrete C20/25 foundation reinforced with B500c steel
• Load bearing walls with a combination of 20 cm thick bricks internally and natural 8-10 cm thick Rethymnon stone externally. The stone is assembled and coated with water-proofing varnish
• The outer vertical edges are shaped with cornerstones
• At the jambs, the upper and the lower surfaces of the windows and the doors, frames are shaped
• Inner wall made of 9- hole and 12- hole bricks
• Three layered inner coatings
• Heat insulation of all the external elements and walls with 5 cm thick extruded polystyrene
