Venetian Stone building in Santorini

Venetian Stone building in Santorini

The Venetian building, which is located on the island of Santorini Fira Kaldera, was renovated in 1995 based upon old Venetian plans which had been approved by city planning of the area. Renovations were made on the outer structure and the materials.

The building, which has stone walls that have a thickness of 50-80cm, is built on a hillside. The outer door is decorated by two green marble columns which came from the ruins of the old cathedral of Fira.

The main entrance leads to a room which has a balcony that overlooks beautiful views of the island of Kameni. Kameni is the name of the island which hosts the dormant volcano of Santorini. To the right of this particular room, there is a bar and a large room with sizeable wooden framed double glazed windows that are mechanically operated. The roof is made up of two large domes as all renaissance buildings are.

To the left of the entrance, another room similar to the room just described is found. In this room, there is a large indoor staircase which leads to an apartment with a dressing room and bathroom with a bathtub and hydro-massage. Underneath the staircase there is a W.C.

The roof is made of cement and can be made into a roof garden. Access to the roof is via a marble staircase. The steps have been made from the marble aquired from the ruins of the cathedral mentioned above. The open veranda has marble tables constructed from the same marble.

From the main room we can go down marble stairs that lead to a room which is level with the main road. This room is lit and aired from three sides.

There is also a main room with a hall and a smaller room with split level floors. This room contains another marble staircase which leads to a special storage area. This area was once used to press grapes for wine. There are also two W.C. and a dark storage area on the north side of the road which leads to a tank for the runoff water from the roof. On the south side of the road there is a room with a door that leads to an outdoor area which contains a room for the water pressure system.

The floor is made of marble which contains bits of white and black marble. The north, south and easterly doors all have large awnings which house two W.C.s and showers. These hallways have been laid with pebbles from the sea.
